You should find out where this spot is on each of your clubs, and remember to bring the spot into contact with the ball at the absolute extremity of your downward swing. Tahoe golf tip: How to best grip your club

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Tip of the week” is a periodic feature running in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, in partnership with the Incline Village General Improvement District, providing locals with various tips pertaining to the recreation opportunities the district provides. When it comes to hitting the long ball, you might be surprised to learn just how important the smaller muscles in the hands are. In reality, better driving isn’t only about using the bigger muscles and your core, but you have to make sure the smaller muscles and joints in the hands and wrists are doing what they’re supposed to do, as well. So let’s look at two aspects of how the hands should work. First, the right hand. Many of my students assume that because the left arm is the dominant arm in the swing (which isn’t always true, folks), the right arm is just along for the ride. That’s not correct. The right hand plays a pivotal role in helping you add power, and that comes from the hinging and unhinging of the right wrist. What I mean by that is, think of how you hammer a nail into a board. Better yet, pay attention to how you hold a hammer and how you instinctively hinge the wrists so the hammerhead moves faster than the handle and hits the nail with extra speed and force. The same principle applies to how the right hand is supposed to hinge in the golf swing. In fact, it’s the same type of hinge. The back of the hand should hinge toward the thumb, helping to add extra power. Second, look how I’m holding the hammer in my fingers — not completely in my palm. You can see that the hammer is supported by the heel pad of my hand. The same principle applies with a golf club. When the club is in the hands correctly, it’ll feel lighter, grip pressure will be lighter (more on that in a second), and the wrist and hands will be tension free. So grab a hammer and feel for yourself the right way to hold a club with your right hand. Then do the same for your left hand. The second element I want to mention is grip pressure. Jack Nicklaus is on record saying if you want to hit it farther, you have to grip the club lighter. The lighter your grip pressure, the [...]

Golf Tips – Tempo and Timing Drills

Hello Golfers Just to share a problem with you and I think it is a common problem with most golfers I see when I give lessons. It has only been 2 seasons that I have gotten back into the game seriously since my accident. With my bad back I had to readjust my tempo and timing to protect myself from damaging myself more. However, even slowing down my back tends to get tired by the back nine and subconsciously I try to compensate with my arms and hands. I get quick with my back swing as well and can feel my head come up, causing some interesting shots (BAD shots). Timing and tempo are so important to a smooth golf swing and over swing can cause a lot of miss hit balls and strokes. I love the feet together drill for this over swinging and when I catch myself compensating during my game, I will stand behind my ball and take a few practice swings with my feet together to get back in the groove. Let me explain this drill, for those of you who do not know this drill. If you find that you have a tendency to over swing (get quick) and find it difficult to keep your head down, this drill is for you. When on the range, place your feet together and take your normal swing. If you swing to quick or over swing, you will find it hard to keep your balance. You will have to find a tempo that will allow you to swing with out feeling like your going to fall over. Its that simple, but is perfect to find a good tempo for your swing. It really makes you slow down your swing. Another drill for timing if you are an over the top swinger, letting your body get out in front to quickly is a over the top result. Take your normal stance and then take your back leg  and place it straight behind you, up on your toes. This restricts your hip turn and gets your hands and hips back in time together. You will get a good feel on how the hands and hips should be at contact of the ball. The opposite of the above swing is getting your hands out in front of your body. The drill to fix this is almost the same, but instead of placing your back foot [...]
